Australský ovčák (česká zkratka AUO, angl. Australian Shepherd; hovorově ausík, australák nebo australáček) je středně velký, silný a vytrvalý pes, který byl vyšlechtěný k pasení ovcí a koní.
The Australian Shepherd (Czech abbreviation AUO, English Australian Shepherd) is a medium-sized, strong and hardy dog that was bred to herd sheep and horses.
Plemeno pochází: Plemeno vzniklo v USA, Kalifornii na začátku 20. století, kdy byly vyšlechtěni k pasení ovcí dovezených z Austrálie a Nového Zélandu, kde je využívali hlavně kovbojové na pasení koní v obrovských prériích a loukách. Dnes je kromě pastevectví používán také jako záchranářský pes a také jako společník, který však potřebuje dostatek prostoru a využití.
Origin of the breed: The breed originated in the USA, California at the beginning of the 20th century, when they were bred to herd sheep imported from Australia and New Zealand, where they were mainly used by cowboys to herd horses in the vast prairies and meadows. Today, in addition to herding, it is also used as a rescue dog and also as a companion, but it needs enough space and use.
První AUO v ČR: První vrh štěňat australského ovčáka s registrací FCI byl v ČR odchován v roce 2002 v chovatelské stanici Puella Fera. V současné době zastřešují chov australského ovčáka v ČR dva chovatelské kluby - KCHBO (Klub chovatelů belgických ovčáků v Českých zemích) a KCHMPP (Klub chovatelů málopočetných plemen).

Povaha: Jsou to hraví, přítulní psi, jsou velice poslušní a rychle se učí. Mají silně vyvinutý obranný pud a mohou instinktivně pást (mohou se snažit pást i lidi nebo jiné psy, což lze ale správnou výchovou eliminovat). S lidmi i zvířaty se snášejí dobře. Ke svým lidem je oddaný, naopak k cizím by měl být rezervovaný. Australský ovčák je vhodný především, pro život na venkově, ale i dobře si zvykne ve městě.

The Australian Shepherd is especially suitable for life in the countryside, but it also adapts well to the city.

Vzhled: Australský ovčák je silný, robustní pes, úměrný vzrůstem. Formát těla je lehce obdélníkový, hlava velikostí ladící s tělem, silná, suchá a stejně dlouhá jako široká. Stop je znatelný, pysky pevně přiléhající. Čenich je u black-trikolor a blue-merle psů černý, ale u red merle a red-tricolor hnědý. Požadována je plnochrupost a nůžkový skus. Oči jsou mandlového tvaru a mohou být hnědé, jantarové nebo modré. Uši jsou trojúhelníkového tvaru, střední velikosti a poměrně vysoko nasazené. Ocas je rovný, přirozeně dlouhý nebo přirozeně krátký (NBT), je-li kupírovaný, jeho délka nepřesahuje 10 cm. Srst je jemná, hustá a středně dlouhá. Velká výhoda je, že mají tzv samočistící srst (ušpiní se jako dobytci jen co uschnou do pár hodin jsou zase čistí). Barvy blue merle, černá, red merle, červená s či bez bílých a tříslových odznaků, možné bílé nebo měděné odznaky - bikolor, trikolor. Na hlavě by bílá neměla převažovat a linie růstu bílých chlupů límce nesmí přesáhnout kohoutek.

The muzzle is black in black-tricolor and blue-merle dogs, but brown in red merle and red-tricolor dogs. A full bite and a scissor bite are required. The eyes are almond shaped and can be brown, amber or blue. The ears are triangular in shape, medium in size and set rather high. The tail is straight, naturally long or naturally short (NBT), if it is docked, its length does not exceed 10 cm. The coat is soft, dense and medium length. A big advantage is that they have so-called self-cleaning fur (they get dirty like cattle and are clean again as soon as they dry within a few hours). Colors blue merle, black, red merle, red with or without white and tan markings, possible white or copper markings - bicolor, tricolor. White should not predominate on the head, and the growth line of the white hairs of the collar must not extend beyond the withers.

Máme doma 4 auo a každý svou povahou je úplně jiný a přesto společné mají mnoho. Všichni jsou to neuvěřitelní mazlíci, kluci ti by umazlili snad každého, Nessinka ta se mazlí především se svými k cizím je velmi ostražitá a nedůvěřivá dokud panička nedovolí a ona se blíže neseznámí mazlit se prostě nebude. Všichni jsou velmi oddaní, milují celou rodinu a tu si hlídají. Co také mají společné je vodu a je jedno jestli je to rybník, potok, či obyčejná kaluž či smrdutá močuvka pokud se v tom dá rochnit je to něco báječného a neodolatelného. Nejlepší je pak se osušit o paničku a dosušit se na nejšpinavějším místě široko daleko. Díky tomuto jsem pochopila proč AUO se říká PRASOPSI oni fakt jsou to prasátka. Špinavý AUO šťastný AUO. Dasty a Ness jsou neunavní aportéři, milují pískací hračky, které chtějí házet pořád dokola a nikdy toho nemají dost. Dasty s páničkem chodí dlouhé procházky které oba milují. Ness ta má raději kratší běh či pomalou klidnou procházku, kde může být navolno. Maty bude dělat vše co si bude myslet, že udělá paničce radost. Na vodítku to chce s AUO velkou trpělivost mají tendece tahat. Když pak jsou sami tak chodí pěkně a nejsou to takový tahouni, avšak jakmile jde celá smečka tak všichni chtějí být první. Naši pejskové jsou zvyklí v bytě, venku na zahradě či v kotci. Dasty je raději venku doma je mu příliš velké vedro a nervozně chodí sem a tam, Maty a Axlík ti jsou rádi všude, Nessinka ta si zvykla na domací režim snad během minuty a ta je nejšťastnější v bytě.

They are all very devoted, love the whole family and look after each other. What they also have in common is water, and it doesn't matter if it's a pond, a stream, or an ordinary puddle or a stinky swamp, as long as you can swim in it, it's something wonderful and irresistible. The best thing to do is to dry off with a towel and dry off in the dirtiest place far and wide. Thanks to this, I understood why AUO is called PRASOPSI, they really are pigs. Dirty AUO happy AUO. Dasty and Ness are tireless fetchers, they love squeaky toys that they want to throw around and can never get enough of. Dasty and Panic go for long walks, which they both love. Ness prefers a shorter run or a slow, leisurely walk where she can relax. Maty will do whatever she thinks will make her mistress happy. On a leash, it takes a lot of patience with AUO, they tend to pull. When they are alone, they walk nicely and are not such pushovers, but when the whole pack goes, they all want to be first. Our dogs are used to living in the apartment, outside in the garden or in the kennel. Dasty prefers to be outside at home, he is too hot and walks nervously here and there, Maty and Axlík are happy everywhere, Nessinka got used to the home regime within a minute and she is the happiest in the apartment.
